ചിത്രലേഖാ ഫിലിം സൊസൈറ്റിയിലൂടെ മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് പുതിയ വഴിത്തിരിവ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത് 60-കളിലാണ്. അക്കാലത്ത് ബി.ഗോപാലകൃഷണന് എന്ന രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരന് അയാളുടെ അമ്മയുടെയും അച്ഛന്റെയും കണ്ണിലെ സ്വപ്നം മാത്രമായിരുന്നിരിക്കണം! ചിത്രലേഖയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം അടൂര് സിനിമകളെടുത്തു. എന്നാല് ഒന്നിന് പുറകെ ഒന്നെന്ന മട്ടില് സിനിമകളെ പെറ്റിട്ട് പണമുണ്ടാക്കാന് അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രമിച്ചില്ല.
പറയാനൊരു കഥയുണ്ട് എന്ന് തോന്നിയപ്പോള് മാത്രം അദ്ദേഹം സിനിമയുമായി വന്നു. ആ സിനിമകള്ക്കിടയില് എട്ടും പത്തും വര്ഷങ്ങളുടെ ഗ്യാപ്പുണ്ടായി.ആ ഇടക്കാലങ്ങളില് അദ്ദേഹം സാമ്പത്തിക നേട്ടം കിട്ടാത്ത ഡോക്യുമെന്ററികള് ചെയ്തു.അടൂര് ചെയ്ത ഒരോ സിനിമയും ഇന്ത്യന് സിനിമയുടെ തങ്കത്തിളക്കങ്ങളാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഇത്രമേല് പുരസ്ക്കാരങ്ങള് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിയെത്തിയതും.
